Morocco’s Fatima Tagnaout’s 87th minute strike was enough to earn her country a 1-0 win over Cameroon on day 2 of the Aisha Buhari Invitational Women’s Tournament at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.
The win means the Atlas Lionesses are now the second team to record a win in the tournament after the Super Falcons of Nigeria defeated Mali 2-0 in the opening match on Wednesday.
Both teams played with urgency, trying to break the deadlock with the North Africans showing both tenacity and athleticism similar to that of the west Africans. But the Moroccans proved better of both teams when Tagnaout got the only goal of the game, a result of a counter attack.
Tagnaout, Ghizlane Chebbak, Chhri Ghizlane, Zineb Redouani and Salma Amani trilled the little crowd at the stadia with their personal brilliance with their slick touches, excellent distributions and lovely step-overs.
The only clear cut chance for the Mailians fell to Bella Rose, who brought the crowd to its feet after the quarter-hour when she targeted the near post after beating two opponents on the edge of the penalty box with the balling striking the post and went wide.
The tournament continues on Friday as the Ghana’s Black Queens take on the Banyana Banyana of South Africa on Day 3 of the tournament at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
